LAWRENCEVILLE (METRO ATLANTA) GA – May 6, 2016

The City of Lawrenceville proudly announces that staff member Jessie Ashley, of the Damage Prevention department, will be competing at the 2016 International Locate Rodeo to be held June 23 – 25, 2016 in Dallas, Texas.  Ashley is one of three recipients of the Georgia Utility Coordinating Council’s (GUCC) Locate Rodeo Scholarship and will be representing the City of Lawrenceville, as well as the state of Georgia.

“I am honored and grateful to be recognized for doing a job that I genuinely enjoy,” said Jessie Ashley, Damage Prevention Specialist. “I am thrilled because this opportunity raises global awareness of what we do on a daily basis and not many people fully understand the job of a locator.”

Created in 2001 by Georgia 811, the Locate Rodeo is an international event with competitors attending from as far away as Canada and Australia.  This year, potential competitors in Georgia were offered an opportunity by the GUCC to submit an essay and compete for one of the three all-expense-paid scholarships.

“The Locate Rodeo is provided for locate professionals to encourage better locates, a safer work environment and reduced damage to the utility infrastructure,” said Claudette Campbell, Executive Director, Georgia 811. “This competition gives a profession that normally goes unnoticed – unless a mistake is made – an opportunity to be recognized for doing a good job.”

The mission of the Locate Rodeo is to be the preeminent event for Utility Locate Technician recognition and to serve as the cornerstone to promote high quality and achievable industry standards.

Ashley – who also placed 3rd in the Gas Utilities Division at the 2014 Locate Rodeo event – is excited to continue efforts towards raising public awareness of underground utilities protection and safety procedures.
