City of Lawrenceville Approves $171 Million Annual Budget

City Officials focus on the future with plans and projects for the 2016-17 fiscal year

At the August 1st Council Meeting, City of Lawrenceville officials approved a $171-Million budget for the 2016-17 year. Included in this figure were operating costs associated with the City’s robust utilities infrastructure, administrative services and SPLOST projects.

“The 2016-2017 budget comprehensively reflects the needs of various City of Lawrenceville departments,” said Chuck Warbington, City Manager. “We prioritized these projects based on what will assist our staff to do their jobs more efficiently for their benefit as well as for the benefit of the public.”

Highlights for the 2016-2017 budget included expenses for City of Lawrenceville capital projects like the relocation of the Public Works facility to Pike Street, replacement of aging water lines on Clayton and Perry Street, replacement of all street and pedestrian lighting at the Historic Courthouse, and mainline natural gas pressure improvements.

The budget also highlights certain police department initiatives expected to assist in crime prevention and public trust efforts. These items include the purchase of analytic/predictive policing software, body cameras for police officers and the addition of one civilian crime scene technician to supplement crime scene investigations.

“In September of last year, we unveiled our strategic plan for the City’s economic development which was created with community and stakeholder input,” said Mayor Judy Jordan Johnson. “We use this plan as a blueprint when prioritizing upcoming projects.

Also included in the budgeted items were marketing initiatives that include a complete redesign for the City’s website. Plans for the new website will ensure that it is more user-friendly and interactive for the public. City officials have completed the process for accepting proposals and expect to begin work on the new website later this year.
