Lawrenceville Celebrates National Safe Digging Month

Mayor Judy Jordan Johnson Presents an Official Proclamation

The City of Lawrenceville’s Damage Prevention Department is supporting Governor Nathan Deal’s proclamation of April as National Safe Digging Month. As a member of both the Gwinnett and Walton County Utility Coordinating Councils (UCC), Lawrenceville has partnered with Georgia 811 for the past four years to support this initiative which was designed to heighten contractor and homeowner awareness of the national 811 notification system.

The purpose of the initiative is to remind individuals served by the City of Lawrenceville to notify utility operators of their intent to dig in order to prevent damage to underground utilities and ensure the safety of Lawrenceville’s residents.

In a short ceremony on April 22nd, Mayor Judy Jordan Johnson presented an official proclamation declaring the month of April as Safe Digging Month in the City of Lawrenceville. Ceremony attendees also enjoyed the following video highlighting lessons in safe digging by respecting the flags and knowing what’s below the surface:

“Locating underground utilities is a process that requires skill, determination, workload management and problem-solving techniques,” said Wesley Huggins, Damage Prevention Specialist for the City of Lawrenceville. “We have a wonderful team of individuals who work diligently and are happy to educate homeowners and citizens on appropriate digging practices.”

Lawrenceville’s gas utilities team recently scored exceptionally well on a routine audit verifying operator qualification rules and procedures. In the future, the team aspires to be the preeminent damage prevention and public awareness department in the state of Georgia by continuing to follow all established laws and procedures.
